Prioritizing safety in the workplace is crucial for the well-being of employees and the success of businesses. Workplace safety goes beyond basic guidelines; it requires a proactive approach to prevent accidents and foster a safe environment. In this blog post, we’ll explore some tips that both employers and employees can incorporate to foster a safer workplace.

Use Equipment and Tools Properly

Misuse of equipment and tools is a common cause of workplace injury. Employees should only operate machinery that they are trained or certified to use. Additionally, avoiding shortcuts and using equipment only as intended can help prevent accidents.

Practice Good Posture

Whether working at a desk job or engaging in physically demanding work, maintaining good posture is essential. Employers can create a safe workstation by including ergonomic chairs, keyboards, and mice to reduce strain during desk work. For physically demanding jobs, proper lifting techniques should be employed, such as utilizing the legs for lifting and turning the feet, rather than depending on the back.

Take Regular Breaks

Combat fatigue and maintain focus by taking regular breaks. In Washington state, employees are required to take at least a 10-minute break for every 4 hours worked. To reduce eye strain for computer users, follow the 20-20-20 rule: look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

Wear Necessary PPE

Wearing the appropriate PPE is crucial to workplace safety. Employers should provide and enforce the use of PPE relevant to each specific job role. Nonslip shoes, gloves, hard hats, goggles, earplugs, and face masks play vital roles in safeguarding against potential hazards and promoting a safe working environment.

Report Unsafe Conditions

Vigilance is key to maintaining a safe workplace. Employers should encourage employees to report any unsafe conditions, such as blocked emergency exits, malfunctioning equipment, chemical spills, or slip/trip hazards. Safety equipment such as alarms, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers should be regularly inspected.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Unfortunately, despite having established procedures to mitigate accidents and injuries, emergencies can still occur. Regular drills and training sessions contribute to a well-prepared workforce. Employees should familiarize themselves with safety protocols in case of an emergency, including knowing the location of exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. Staff members who are trained to administer first aid care should also be identified.

Have a Plan for Workplace Injuries

In the case of an injury that requires medical attention, employers and employees should know where the nearest urgent care facilities are that can properly treat and report workplace injuries to relevant agencies, such as L&I. In addition, employers can partner with occupational medicine departments to handle workplace injury cases.
